Tennessee and Lizzie Crozier French
Born into a political family just years before the outbreak of the Civil War, GFWC clubwoman Lizzie Crozier French led a life of service, education, and activism. A native daughter of Tennessee, French was born in Knoxville, educated in Columbia, and spent her early adulthood teaching and serving as Principal at the East Tennessee Female Institute.
French grew up in a household full of books that encouraged women’s education, and she harbored a lifelong passion for learning. French’s curiosity led her to travel extensively to attend lectures and classes across the country. One of her travels brought her to New York City, where she was able to visit the Sorosis Club. The encounter spurred her to found Ossoli Circle in 1885, the first federated women’s club in the southern United States.
French’s travels also introduced her to more progressive feminist ideals than those she had grown up with, and she became a lifelong advocate for women’s educational opportunities and women’s suffrage. In 1890, she founded the Woman’s Educational and Industrial Union to advocate for female inmates and workers in Tennessee. She was also a sharp and constant voice in Tennessee politics, delivering many speeches and critiques of the state’s treatment of women.
French also served as the president of the Tennessee Suffrage Association and launched a campaign to help women write letters to their local newspapers across the state that advocated for suffrage. She was a constant lobbying presence in Nashville and was influential in getting enough representatives to vote to pass ratification of the 19th Amendment.Although Lizzie Crozier French lived to vote in her first Presidential election, she died in May of 1926 in Washington, D.C. She is memorialized in the Tennessee Woman Suffrage Memorial in Knoxville, Tennessee.

It is with sadness we announce the passing of GFWC Arizona Past President (1998–2000) Virginia “Ginnie” Thomas. Ginnie was a 50+ year member of the Tucson Woman’s Club, charter member of the Southern District Chili Peppers Woman’s Club, and founder and charter member of ESO Fifth Wheels Woman’s Club. Condolences may be sent to her family at 8722 Old Spanish Terrace Drive, Tucson, AZ, 85710.
Volunteers in Action
GFWC has launched five new Community Service Programs. Share your club’s recent successes within the areas of Arts and Culture, Civic Engagement and Outreach, Education and Libraries, Environment, and Health and Wellness! And yes, submissions highlighting virtual volunteer work are welcome!

Techie’s Tips: How to Send High-Resolution Photos from Your Phone
 Picture this: you use your phone to take a great quality photo of your club volunteering at a recent event. You send it via email to PR@GFWC.org for Volunteers in Action or to another clubwoman for publication in the club newsletter. But when you see it posted, it’s grainy! What happened?
While most phones take photos with a good resolution, they also automatically resize the photo when you send it via email, causing a loss of quality. Here’s how you can fix that:
- Select your photo and choose the Email option for sharing.
- Type in the recipient’s email and add any message you might have. Click Send.
- A message will appear that gives you the option for size: Small, Medium, Large, and Actual Size. Choose Actual Size.
This way you won’t reduce photo size and therefore reduce resolution. Follow those simple steps to make sure your photos look their best!
Subscribe to the Legislative Action Center
Are you new to GFWC’s Legislative Action Center or just overwhelmed by all of its possibilities? No worries, GFWC has got your back! The first step is to become an official subscriber. You can do this on the home page of the Legislative Action Center by clicking the “Join Now” button. After completing the requested information (name, address, and email) remember to check the “Email Opt-in” box to receive our alerts. Click the “register” button and you’re an official subscriber, but the excitement doesn’t stop there! GFWC will send alerts to the email provided during registration. The most important thing you can do as a subscriber to the LAC is to respond to GFWC’s legislative alerts. At the end of all of GFWC’s emails will be a link to “Take Action.” Click this link and you will be taken directly to our alert on the Legislative Action Center. Complete the requested information, read the letter to be sent to your member of Congress, then click submit. It couldn’t get any easier! With your participation, GFWC has a national voice and recognition in the halls of Capitol Hill.
